With consumers increasingly checking the green credentials of retailers, the search for environmentally sustainable solutions is on. A growing number of highstreet names are turning to double decking as a means of reducing their carbon footprint and overall emissions levels.
Widespread conversion to retail double decking in the UK is predicted to save 1 million tonnes of CO 2 emissions a year. That’s 5% of the UK’s total road freight transport carbon emissions in a single step – which would go a long way to achieving the national targets of 26% cuts in carbon emissions by 2020, and 60% by 2050.
Reports suggest that road will continue to account for almost 60% of the UK’s total freight movements by 2020 – making it the most important freight sector to target for efficiency improvements.
By effectively removing vehicles from the roads, increased double deck operations also offers significant reductions in congestion and noise levels.
