Transdek UK was announced Specialist Winner of the Automation category in the inaugural Design 4 Safety Awards at IMHX 2010, the UK’s main materials handling show, which takes place tri-annually.

Judged by two panels of independent industry experts, the awards were founded by BITA (the British Industrial Truck Association) and Quartz Publishing & Exhibitions Ltd. to highlight the importance of product design in generating safer materials handling practices.

Transdek’s Double Deck Lift was voted winner of its category on the grounds that it: “deals thoroughly with the numerous hazards associated with the loading and unloading of double-deck trailers, which are being increasingly adopted by haulage operators to reduce costs and carbon emissions.”

Citations from the judges also noted that, “Based on the judges' real-world experience [Transdek’s] Double Deck Lift reduces the likelihood of struck-by incidents involving lift trucks, and makes it safer to move loads at height”, praising the product as, “an extremely well thought-out product that is easy to use, but also enforces safe process discipline through effective safety interlocks.”

Peter Lennon, Head of the Workplace Transport team in the Health & Safety Executive's Work Environment, Radiation & Gas Division, presented the awards at IMHX.  Speaking in support of the Health & Safety at Work Act and the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations, he said: “It is clear that designing innovatively for health and safety makes economic sense, because it helps businesses manage risks and so reduce the number of people being injured or suffering ill-health at work."

This statement was mirrored by the judges, who further commended Transdek’s entry as “a very good example of how innovative design enables safety to remain front of mind without restricting commercial imperatives.”
