A.F. Blakemore & Son Ltd is the largest division of the convenience retail chain SPAR UK, with a turnover in excess of £1 billion. It owns 280 SPAR stores and services over 950 across England and Wales. The family-run business, which was founded in 1917, includes retail, wholesale distribution, food service, logistics and shop fitting divisions.
Transdek designed, built and fitted a modular ‘transit lobby’ for A.F. Blakemore’s Tipton DC. The surface-mounted structure was sealed to the main warehouse to provide a clad, weather-proof continuum through to the yard and lift. Three extra doorways in the transit lobby maintain a through-flow for forklift trucks and provide extra delivery capacity.
The warehouse extension has given A.F. Blakemore an extra 800 sq ft of storage space at the level-access site and, twinned with Transdek V2G loadhouse, has shaved 90 minutes off the company’s double deck loading times. Free access has also been kept between the main warehouse and the yard. Adjustable legs accommodate fluctuations in the yard surface.
