Matalan is a leading UK and international omni-channel clothing and homeware retailer. Founded in 1985, in 2019 the company employed over 13,000 people, operated 230 stores in the UK, turned over £1.1 billion. Matalan’s fleet of 10 fixed double deck trailers was previously loaded via taillift at the Knowsley national distribution centre.
Matalan commissioned Transdek to supply two 18-rollcage double deck lifts to service fixed deck trailers at the company’s Knowsley DC. The lifts were fitted with bi-fold bridge plates to enable rear door-opening after docking, and with taillift pockets, which were specified as an alternative to integrating taillift transformers in to the pods.
As well as improving safety for loaders, the double deck lifts have cut loading times by 50%, compared to the previous taillift operations. In addition, the taillift pockets have effectively cut taillift usage by c. 50%, with knock-on benefits for maintenance costs. The modular, plug-and-play lift pods were each fitted in 2 days.
