The Client

Established over 40 years ago, Liverpool based TJ Morris [as of 2017] operates over 400 Home Bargains stores across the UK and employs over 17,000 staff. The company is the second largest independent grocer in the UK and plans to expand to more than 800 stores.

To facilitate the retailer’s rapid expansion, a £70m, 700,000 sq ft distribution centre was constructed at Amesbury, Wiltshire. TJ Morris is committed to running 100% of its trunking and the majority of its retail deliveries on fixed double deck trailers.

What We Did

We installed 15 high capacity double deck lifts at the RDC and along with two vehicle cleansing lifts, used for jet washing and cleaning inside double deck vehicles. Each modular double deck lift was supplied as a pre built pod, designed for rapid installation within a two day window. All lifts were held off site and delivered onsite as required to meet the build schedule.

Our project management team liaised closely with the architects and sub-contractors to incorporate 900mm high docks at the site’s dedicated double deck bays. We manufactured modular loading ramps for fitment in to pre cast slots in the warehouse floor to facilitate this direct run through to the lower vehicle deck from the warehouse.

Our Active Management System (AMS) was used to integrate each lift control panel into the RDC’s main IT system, giving live plant status information and enabling management analysis of the performance of each loading bay.

The Results

The 900mm docks allow TJ Morris’ double deck trailers to be loaded in just two lift cycles – reducing vehicle fill times to 45 minutes, which speeds up turnaround, minimises product handling, improves safety and drives down costs. Remote access to the AMS has allowed remote trouble shooting and fast resolution of any technical issues by facilities managers and service engineers, enhancing loading bay productivity and minimising downtime.
