Yodel is one of the UK’s largest B2B and B2C parcel companies, delivering over 155 million parcels a year. Formerly the Home Delivery Network, the company was rebranded to Yodel in 2010.
Yodel works with various retail and business sectors, including: fashion, leisure, health and beauty, home and garden, electrical, gifts, publishing, entertainment, and industrial components. It also offers specialist handling for delicate items such as wine and flowers.
The courier has over 60 sites nationwide, with three major hubs at Shaw, Hatfield and Wednesbury. When it took on the Wednesbury site as part of its expansion, Yodel chose Transdek to fit new lifts in 10 of the flat floor loading bays.
What We Did
We installed 10 new 4.5 tonne dock lifts for Yodel at its fast moving Wednesbury hub in the West Midlands. The lifts all incorporated our unique, surface mounted design, enabling rapid loading – of four pallets or eight roll cages at a time – from ground level to all single deck and moving deck vehicle types.
The lifts were installed around the company’s peak Christmas period, so we had to work closely with Yodel to establish a flexible, phased installation process, including over weekends, to ensure minimal disruption and reduced costs.
In line with Transdek’s rapid install approach, between two and three lifts were installed in under 1 day to provide seamless integration. Eight of the units were pre-built and pre-fabricated at Transdek and delivered as complete units. Due to space restrictions within the warehouse, the final two units were supplied in kit form and built up onsite, allowing the machines to be fitted at the heart of the operation.
Our unique, modular design and rapid installation capability allowed operations to continue running uninterruptedly at the Wednesbury hub, which handles up to 280,000 parcels per day.
With a compact design, which allows companies to make the most effective use of available warehouse space, and industry leading built in safety features, the new lifts are simple to operate and were easily integrated in to the Wednesbury operation.
The lifts’ robust 4.5 tonne capacity has enabled Yodel to lift heavier goods and packages from ground level onto the loading dock/platform ready to be transferred into vehicle trailers and to facilitate faster loading and increase efficiency.
